Dual-temp hot and cold plunges
Some cold plunge units go beyond cold therapy and offer a built-in hot tub mode, letting you switch between cold immersion and warm water soaking in the same tub. Also referred to as a dual temperature cold plunge or a cold plunge with heating option, these units give you full temperature control in a single piece of equipment.
What is hot tub mode on a cold plunge?
Hot tub mode means the chiller system can also operate in reverse — heating water to a warm or hot temperature rather than cooling it. Depending on the model, heating typically ranges from 95°F to 104°F (35°C to 40°C), controlled through the same digital interface used for cold therapy.
Benefits of a cold plunge with hot tub mode
- Single unit, two purposes: Save space and cost compared to owning a separate hot tub and cold plunge.
- Year-round use: Use the heating mode during colder months when cold therapy feels less appealing, keeping the unit in active use all year.
- Relaxation and recovery: Hot water soaking provides its own benefits — muscle relaxation, improved sleep, and stress reduction.
A note on contrast therapy
A single dual-temp unit cannot provide true contrast therapy simultaneously — it operates in one mode at a time. If you want to alternate between hot and cold in quick succession, you would need two separate units, or plan sessions on consecutive days using the same tub. Some users do use these tubs for back-to-back hot/cold sessions with a temperature transition in between, but keep in mind that reheating or recooling a full tub can take 60–90 minutes.
What to consider when buying
Temperature range
Verify both the minimum cold and maximum hot temperatures. A full-featured system should reach at least 39°F (4°C) on the cold end and 104°F (40°C) on the hot end.
Insulation quality
Good insulation benefits both modes — it holds cold temperatures steady and retains heat longer during hot tub use, reducing energy consumption. Look for double-wall construction with foam insulation.
